Entry 2 - Misconceptions and Species Identity
On the surface, one can look at the Therian culture and ask, “Isn’t this just being Furry?” Given the nature of this blog, the answer shouldn’t surprise you. While there are similarities and overlaps in the Therian and Furry communities, and Therians are often time mistaken for Furries, Therians tend to be much more private and reserved when it comes to their ideology and identity. This is because they’re often misunderstood even within the Furry community, and receive more outside persecution and isolation from “normal” societies than Furries (Clegg, 4). Therians can sometimes find difficulty integrating even with Furry social circles if they explain the nature of Therianthropy. In an ongoing study done by Courtney Plante, et al, it was found that Therians make up less than 11-19% of the Furry population (Plante, 112).
